Calathea Makoyana - Peacock Plant
The Calathea Makoyana, commonly known as the Peacock Plant or Zebra Plant, showcases some of the most distinctive foliage among tropical houseplants. This living piece of art features soft green leaves adorned with uniquely shaped patterns that resemble peacock feathers, making it a standout addition to any indoor plant collection.
Living Foliage That Moves
Like all calathea varieties, the Makoyana exhibits nyctinasty - a natural behavior where leaves adjust their position as the sun rotates throughout the day. In the morning, leaves lay flat to absorb maximum light, while at night they fold upward in a prayer-like position. This dynamic characteristic adds an interactive element to your indoor garden, creating subtle movement and visual interest.
Native Tropical Heritage
Native to the tropical regions of South and Central America, Africa, and the West Indies, Calathea plants have evolved in humid forest understories. The Makoyana variety maintains these tropical origins with its preference for warm, humid environments and indirect light conditions. This heritage makes it well-suited for bathroom environments or spaces with naturally higher humidity levels.
Distinctive Leaf Patterns
The Calathea Makoyana's leaves display intricate patterns with light green markings on darker green backgrounds. The underside of the leaves reveals burgundy-purple tones, creating a stunning contrast when the leaves move throughout the day. These brightly colored, upright, oval leaves are the primary reason calathea plants are cultivated, and the Makoyana exemplifies this ornamental appeal.
Care Requirements
This potted live indoor plant thrives in bright, indirect light and consistently moist soil. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade the distinctive leaf patterns. Regular misting or placement near a humidifier helps replicate its native tropical environment. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, using filtered or distilled water when possible to prevent leaf browning from mineral buildup.
