Scindapsus Treubii 'Moonlight' - Sterling Silver Houseplant
The Scindapsus Treubii 'Moonlight', commonly called Sterling Silver, is a highly sought-after rare houseplant known for its distinctive silvery foliage. This tropical climbing plant features thick, dark-green leaves with a metallic silver sheen that creates a striking visual effect in any indoor space.
Plant Characteristics
This Scindapsus variety displays thick, velvety leaves that reflect light with their signature silver overlay. The dark green base color contrasts beautifully with the silvery sheen, making each leaf a unique statement piece. As a member of the Araceae family, this plant shares growth characteristics with other popular houseplants like Pothos and Philodendron, but stands apart with its rare coloration.
Care Requirements
Scindapsus Treubii 'Moonlight' thrives in bright, indirect light where its silver coloration becomes most pronounced. The plant tolerates medium light conditions but may lose some of its characteristic sheen in lower light. Water when the top 2-3 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. This plant prefers well-draining soil and benefits from moderate humidity levels, though it adapts well to average household conditions.
As a climbing plant, the Moonlight Scindapsus can be trained up a moss pole or trellis, or allowed to trail from a hanging basket. The plant produces aerial roots that help it climb in its natural habitat.
Why Collectors Love This Plant
The Sterling Silver Scindapsus became one of the most coveted houseplants due to its limited availability and stunning appearance. Nurseries and plant enthusiasts actively search for this variety because of its unique silver foliage that sets it apart from more common houseplants. The thick, substantial leaves give the plant a premium quality that photographs beautifully and makes a bold statement in plant collections.
Growth and Maintenance
This relatively low-maintenance houseplant grows at a moderate pace and can reach several feet in length when provided with proper care. Fertilize monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. The plant benefits from occasional wiping of leaves to maintain their lustrous appearance and remove dust.
