Schefflera Arboricola - Dwarf Umbrella Tree
The Schefflera Arboricola, commonly known as the Dwarf Umbrella Tree, is an evergreen houseplant native to Taiwan. This compact version of the larger Schefflera Actinophylla features slender stalks adorned with oblong leaves arranged in a distinctive circular pattern at the end of each stem, creating a natural umbrella-like canopy that gives the plant its popular name.
Plant Characteristics
This tropical houseplant showcases glossy, dark green foliage that grows in clusters of 7-9 leaflets radiating from a central point. The leaves emerge on thin, flexible stems that create an elegant, layered appearance. As the plant matures, it develops a fuller, bushier form while maintaining its compact size, making it ideal for indoor spaces where floor space is limited.
Care Requirements
The Schefflera Arboricola thrives in bright, indirect light but demonstrates remarkable adaptability to low light conditions, making it suitable for offices and rooms with limited natural sunlight. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, typically once per week. This plant prefers moderate humidity but tolerates average household conditions. Temperature ranges between 60-75°F are optimal for healthy growth.
Air Purifying Benefits
Beyond its ornamental value, the Dwarf Umbrella Tree actively filters indoor air by removing common toxins. This natural air purification capability makes it a functional addition to home and office environments, contributing to improved indoor air quality while adding greenery to your space.
Ideal Placement
The compact growth habit of Schefflera Arboricola makes it perfect for tabletops, desks, shelves, and small corners. Its vertical growth pattern and moderate size suit apartments, condos, and offices where space efficiency matters. The plant adapts well to various indoor environments, from bright living rooms to dimmer office spaces.
Beginner-Friendly Features
This houseplant ranks among the most forgiving options for new plant owners. It tolerates occasional missed waterings, adapts to varying light levels, and requires minimal maintenance beyond basic care. The Schefflera Arboricola signals its needs clearly - drooping leaves indicate thirst, while yellowing suggests overwatering - making it easy to adjust your care routine.
