Ficus Elastica 'Ruby Pink' - Variegated Rubber Plant
The Ficus Elastica 'Ruby Pink' showcases striking red-pink and white variegation across its glossy leaves, making it one of the most visually distinctive rubber plant varieties available. Native to tropical regions of India and Malaysia, this hardy evergreen brings bold color to indoor spaces while maintaining the robust nature rubber plants are known for.
Distinctive Variegated Foliage
Unlike solid green rubber plants, the Ruby Pink variety displays dramatic variegation patterns that combine red, pink, cream, and white tones throughout its large, waxy leaves. Each leaf develops unique coloring, creating a living focal point that evolves as the plant matures. The variegated foliage requires more attention to lighting conditions compared to non-variegated varieties like the 'Burgundy' to maintain its vibrant coloration.
Light Requirements
This variegated rubber plant thrives in bright indirect light and will not perform well in low light environments. The variegation depends on adequate light exposure to maintain its pink and white patterns. Position near east or west-facing windows with filtered sunlight, or use sheer curtains to diffuse direct sun. Insufficient light will cause the plant to produce more green leaves and lose its characteristic variegation.
Watering and Soil Moisture
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. The 10-inch pot provides adequate root space for established growth while allowing proper drainage. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering causes leaf drop, so maintaining consistent moisture levels is essential for this tropical species.
Important Safety Information
Ficus elastica produces latex sap that is toxic to skin and poisonous if ingested. Pet owners should keep this plant out of reach of cats and dogs, as consumption can cause digestive issues and other health problems. Individuals with latex allergies should exercise caution when handling this plant, wearing gloves during pruning or repotting to avoid skin contact with the sap.
Size and Growth Habit
This specimen arrives in a 10-inch pot, providing a substantial presence suitable for floor placement or large plant stands. As an evergreen tropical plant, it maintains its foliage year-round and can grow several feet tall indoors with proper care. The upright growth habit makes it an excellent statement plant for corners, entryways, or beside furniture.
