Aeschynanthus Radicans - Curly Lipstick Plant
The Curly Lipstick Plant (Aeschynanthus radicans) stands out with its distinctive scarlet flowers that emerge from buds resembling miniature lipstick tubes. This trailing houseplant features cascading stems adorned with glossy, curled foliage that creates visual interest even when not in bloom.
Distinctive Flowering Display
Flowers develop in clusters at the growing tips, showcasing a striking color progression from deep orange-red to bright orange, transitioning to yellow and green tones. The tubular blooms emerge from dark burgundy calyxes that give this plant its signature lipstick appearance. These bright orange blooms create a dramatic focal point in any indoor space.
Foliage Characteristics
The mottled, shiny leaves grow along trailing stems that can extend several feet, making this an excellent choice for hanging baskets or elevated planters. The curly foliage texture adds dimension and creates a lush, full appearance as the plant matures.
Growth Habit
As an epiphytic plant in its natural habitat, Aeschynanthus radicans develops cascading stems that drape gracefully downward. This growth pattern makes it particularly suited for display locations where the trailing stems can be appreciated, brightening shelves, plant stands, or hanging containers.
Care Overview
This tropical houseplant thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers consistent moisture without waterlogging. The lipstick plant appreciates humidity and warm temperatures, reflecting its rainforest origins. Proper light exposure encourages abundant flowering throughout the growing season.
